Flames of War
Andy Culham
Flames Of War is a game that allows you to recreate the battles of World War II using miniatures figurines, and so experience the war from the point of view of a front-line company commander. Your troops will move about the tabletop battlefield, taking cover from enemy fire and then blasting back in return. Sometimes they will abandon you as soon as the going gets tough. But by using the sort of tactics and cunning that a real-life commander would, you and your miniatures soldiers will fight their way to victory after victory! Games can be varied, from re enacting famous and infamous battles, ‘what if?’ battles as well as objective games.
The game consists of 6 game turns, each turn includes phases - STARTING: Rally your forces, bring up reserves and air support and spring ambushes. MOVE: Manoeuvre all of your teams into position. SHOOT: Shoot the enemy from a distance. ASSAULT: Charge the enemy defences in fierce hand-to-hand combat.
Each country involved in the war is represented in the game, which each country offering armored, mechanized, infantry and elite companies to choose from. For the best games it is often advised to take a balance so that you have a combined operational force. However you are free to design your own company according to army design rules.
All that is required to play is – some 6 sided dice, tape measure, a company (500pts, 1000pts, 1500pts, 2000pts +), 6’x4’ board, scatter scenery and the will to do battle!!!
Tip: When picking an army, pick a force that really captures your imagination, or from a favorite war film. So if you like Saving Private Ryan go for an American Ranger Company with Shermans!!

I’ve been playing Flames of War since its introduction 5 years ago. Since those early days I have been lucky to own a number of company’s including British Desert Rats, British 11th Armoured Company, Royal Marine Commandos, British Airborne, German Fallschirmjager, 9th SS Panzer Company, 9th SS Panzer Grenadier Company, 105th German Grenadiers.
I chose those forces just because I have always been interested in history pertaining to WW2. At the moment I am busy painting the 9th SS Panzer Division (Tank Company, Panzer Grenadier Company, Recon Company) all together comprising of 12000 pts. So as you can imagine there is much to do. I will post some pics as I go!
